The John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Cup has been launched in a special ceremony at the residence of the former president, John Kufuor, in Accra.

Launched by board members of the JAK Foundation, the ceremony pits Hearts of Oak against Asante Kotoko in Kumasi on October 28.

It (JAK Cup) is aimed at raising funds to build the JAK Center of Leadership and Governance at the University of Ghana.

To members of the JAK Foundation, the football cup match seeks to raise funds for the ‘80 for 80million Cedis’ project to complete the facility at the nation’s Premier University at Legon.

Hearts of Oak representative, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe stated, “I can assure the president (JAK) that Hearts of Oak is fully supporting this project and I will assure Kotoko that Kumasi is now our base and we will definitely beat them.”

In like manner, Kotoko’s new General Manager, George Amoako said “I assure you that this time around Kotoko is in high spirits. This particular match which is in honour of our great leader who happened to be a former chairman of Kotoko can never be missed by our great club, we are going to face Hearts squarely at Kumasi Stadium starting from this very Sunday.”

Youth and Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah said the Cup match is the ultimate solution for the reformation of Ghana football.

“Reforming Ghana’s football, for me, comes from this two clubs and today’s occasion is a platform for sending the signal out there that we have our own former President through whose instrumentality, Ghana was able to go to the World Cup for the first time.

“So today when Ghana’s football is in crises, he is the savior of Ghana’s football. Mr. President you are the role model for the reformation of Ghana football,” Asiamah said.

The former president said, “Now that Hearts have agreed to play Kotoko in Kumasi of all places to honour me, I think it’s only fair for me to state here that for the sake of this match, Kufuor will be like the father of the match.”

Coach Kwesi Appiah, Augustine Arhinful, Laryea Kingston, Joe Addo, goalkeeper Nana Benyin Crentsil, Nana Sam Brew-Butler, Kwadwo Mpiani, Kwabena Agyei , Professor Agyemang Duah, Agyapong, Kudjoe Fianoo, Nana Kwame, Edmund Ackah, Maxwell Asabre were some of the dignitaries that graced the event.

The event which is also in commemoration of JAK’s 80th birthday anniversary is being sponsored by the UMB Bank and arranged by Primeval Media.
