The Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA) in its bid to sensitize the public about water safety and drowning prevention practices has embarked on a day's training exercise with the youth of Sakumono.

The event was preceded by general cleaning on the beaches and was initiated by the Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association. The exercise sought to educate the public in general, about the dangers holidaymakers encounter at our various beaches and the need to adopt preventive mechanisms to avert them.

Seven locally based participants were taken through the basic rudiments of lifesaving techniques.

Participants were again introduced to drowning prevention methods which were one of the cardinal components of the programme.

Programme director Patrick Hector was of the view that the exercise will well equip the locals in Sakumono to master the art of saving lives at the beaches.

GHALDA acting President, Chief Petty Officer David Kwasi Afezame was optimistic the exercise will inculcate into the youth around the area the spirit of cleanliness along the beaches as well as be conscientized about the precautionary measures at the beaches.

The Ghana lifesaving and Diving Association is mandated to ensure that all pools and water bodies in the country are safe for swimmers and for that matter, hotels and guest houses with such are expected to regularise and adopt the safety measures in connection to that.

The next phase of the training programme will be held at a later date this year.
