Denzel wins Overall Best Student at The Sharks High School Quiz Competition

Denzel Segbefia, a final year student from Ghana Christian International High, beat eighty other students from sixteen schools to be adjudged the Overall Best Student at The Sharks High School Quiz competition.

The Sharks Quiz is an all-round high school competition organized by Africa Schools Online in partnership with the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Quiz has a unique format which allows for students from different course areas to be tested on Literacy, Numeracy, STEM and General Knowledge.

In a pulsating final, Ghana Christian International High, a leading private school based in Dodowa beat out the old Toms, St. Thomas Aquinas by 240 to 160 points in the final. Saint Thomas Aquinas had earlier beat Presec-Legon in the semifinal and were optimistic of annexing the trophy but the Denzel-led Christian High team had other plans. Presec-Legon took the third position and Adisadel College, who lost out in the other semifnal against Christian High took the fourth position.

Denzel was exceptional throughout the competition, demonstrating his math whizz ability by answering tough questions in split seconds to the amazement of the audience. He was also as prolific in Science and General Knowledge Questions earning him the accolade of Overall Best Student. For his prize, Denzel won a Unitab laptop from Zepto –Ghana, a laptop from Awknad Group and an RPC bag. He also wins prize money from Family Health Medical School.

He together with his colleagues also met with the Deputy Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum who congratulated them on their exceptional performance. “We need more competitions like this to create healthy competition amongst students. We want our students to strive for the best so they can compete with students across the globe” The Deputy Minister added.

The Executive Director of Africa Schools Online, Abel Ohene Acquaye, thanked the contestants for their notable performances and announced that more public and private schools will be included in the next edition.

The Sharks Quiz gives an opportunity for schools to exhibit their scholarly students from the Sciences, Arts, Business and other disciplines. Other winners of the competition were Isaac Tsibey from St. Thomas Aquinas (Best English Student), David Asiedu from Presec-Legon and Gabriel Sasu from Adisadel College (Outstanding all-round performance) and Peter-Newman Messan and Setor Toseafa from Ghana Christian High (Best In General Knowledge and Science respectively). Maame Akua Ofori Atta (Christan High) won the Overall Best Female Student while Rina Angela Adukure (British International School) won the 2nd best Individual Performance.

The Sharks Quiz is supported by Webster University-Ghana, Family Health Medical School, Zepto-Ghana, Indomie-Ghana, Scholastic and Smartline Publishers. The program was aired on GH One TV.
