Highlights of 2018 Calcio Trade Ball

Last Sunday, footballers, ex-footballers, business men, diplomats, seasoned journalists and people from all walks life gathered under one roof to celebrate enormous achievements of Ghanaian footballers who break their sweats on the football field to bring smiles on the faces of their fans.

The third edition of the Calcio Trade Ball, a brainchild of Arthur Legacy was held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra with support from the Italian Embassy
The event saw some past and present footballers being rewarded for their contribution to Italian football as well as the growth of football in Ghana.

The black tie event was graced by the Italian Ambassador, the Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, 3-time African best player Abedi Pele, Bayern Munich legend, Sammy Kufuor and host of other dignitaries who lit up the events with elegant costume.

As dark clouds continue to hover over Ghana football and Italian football currently at its lowest ebb, the MC humbly asked the guests to lift Ghana and Italian flags and tap their feet to a melodious tune that seeks to bring hope and inspiration to two footballing nations currently facing challenges.

The event could best be described as flawless. From the start to the end, every move by the MC’s, awardees, ushers, diplomats was exceptional and contributed to the great night everyone experienced.



The speech by the Italian Ambassor which aimed at highlighting Italy’s contribution to Ghana was succinct. In line with the theme of ''Life skills after football.'' Former Ghana international, Yusif Chibsah did a fantastic presentation on opportunities available to footballers when they retire. Oliver Arthur’s speech is also one that will be inked in the memories of the players.

The awards

The major reason for the gathering was the awarding of personalities who have overcome various obstacles and made remarkable strides in their fields of endeavor. From Agyemang-Badu’s mum to Stephen Appiah who received the biggest awards on the night.

Ex-Juventus man Stephen Appiah won the prestigious Star of the Order award. Head of Mission of the Italian Embassy, Lorenzo Pinelli, rewarded for his contributions to the organisation of the CTB.

Bechem United bankroller and founder Kingsley Owusu Achau received a Lifetime Outstanding Achievement Award and Theresa Aboma, mother of Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu who claimed the Parent's Impact Award.

The band that performed on the night treated patrons with soothing and melodious tunes. The band which name was given as Illuminaries thrilled the guests with songs that include Liverpool’s You’ll Never Walk Alone Anthem and UEFA’s ‘We are the Champions.
