Water for Rural Africa swears in Advisory Council

Water for Rural Africa on Friday 12th May 2018 formally swore into office its Advisory Council at a private ceremony in Accra.

The ceremony was witnessed by the management team of the organization. The council elected Dr. Jemima Yakah Amoah, a lecturer at the University of Ghana as its first chairperson.

Other members of the Advisory Council include; Dr Kwadjo Andah, a retired civil engineer and hydrologist with vast knowledge in the water sector, Mr. Emmanuel Gaze who happens to be the immediate past director of Technical Services, Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Togbe Hodzi Dunyo vi, chief of Ave - Atave in the Volta region, His Royal Majesty Dr. Ihenetu Eze, the Igbo king in Ghana and Dr. Donald Agumenu, a leadership consultant and philanthropist.

The Advisory Council has a two-year mandate with the responsibility to design, direct and supervise policy of the organization to achieve its vision and objectives - providing water for rural communities across Africa.

In her acceptance speech, the chairperson of the Advisory Council Dr. Jemima Yakah Amoah expressed her gratitude to the board for the confidence reposed in her. She challenged members to work hard to realize this noble vision of the founder of the organization. She was particularly pleased with the presence of the two traditional leaders who she believed will directly champion the course of the people of rural Africa.

As part of its mandate, the Advisory Council appointed and confirmed Dr. Agumenu as its first Executive Director who is equally the founder of Water for Rural Africa.



In his response, the newly appointed Executive Director expressed his humility and joy to have persons of such caliber and achievement accept to be members of the board. He was deeply convinced that their experience and technical know-how will be brought on board to realize the vision of the organization – To provide potable drinking water and sanitation for rural Africa. He took the opportunity to brief the board on work done so far by the organization and also outlined the core objects and priority issues of the organization for the short, medium to long-term. It was most touching to members when they got to know that these projects were solely funded by Dr. Agumenu from his private funds.

It is worth noting therefore that the issue of water has become a global problem and brings to the fore the changing global climate which calls for very prudent action by world leaders in the management of water resources.

More than half of the world’s population currently is without access to clean drinking water. WRA takes this opportunity to call for a more responsible use of our water resources in Ghana and across the African continent. People in Africa must adopt a behavioral and attitudinal change with regards to our use of water.
