Attacks on journalists cast slur on our democracy - GJA Vice President

Linda Asante-Adjei, Vice President, Ghana Journalists Association Linda Asante-Adjei, Vice President, Ghana Journalists Association

Vice President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Linda Asante-Adjei, says the way Journalists are physically abused by the security agencies casts a slur on Ghana's democracy and freedom of the media.

She said the security agencies must see the media as an ally rather than as an enemy.

Speaking on GBC Radio Current Affairs Programme "FOCUS" Mrs. Asante-Adjei said the latest attack on a multimedia journalist at a time when Ghana has been chosen to host World Press Freedom Day, does not speak well of our democracy.

She said the GJA will be meeting the Inspector General of Police (IGP), today (April 18), on the attack on the journalist, and how the media and security agencies can work hand in hand.

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Information, Munira Karim said journalists in Ghana are freer than others in many countries.

She said the fact that journalists in Ghana are not arrested for expressing their editorial opinion, speaks volumes of a free media landscape.

Madam Karim described the attack on the multimedia Journalist as the only down side as Ghana hosts the World, for this year's Press Freedom Day.

Acting Director of Television of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Johnnie Ayitey said it is time the Security Agencies, especially the Police understood the work of Journalists and stop manhandling them.
