Release Koku; it is not right to detain him - Avedzi to police

Member of Parliament for Ketu North Constituency, James Klutse Avedzi has added his voice to criticisms against the arrest of Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho insisting he must be released from Police custody.

The legislature who spoke to GhanaWeb during the ‘Put Ghana First’ demonstration held in Accra, Wednesday stressed that it was unfair for the police to refuse the party official bail.

“You are charging him for treason, you keep changing the charge sheet… now you say the comment he made is treasonable? Allow him to go to court. Why are you keeping him for what?” the legislator asked.

“It is not fair for the Police to keep Koku Anyidoho without bailing him. He should be allowed bail, he will go to court, he will get his lawyers and come and defend the comment that he made. Keeping him in police custody is not good for us,” Mr. Avedzi stated.

Koku Anyidoho was picked up at the Press Centre in Accra on Tuesday afternoon, during a press conference by the Progressive Forces to express their disapproval of a military agreement between Ghana and the US.

This comes after the NDC firebrand was heard in a radio interview suggesting that President Akufo-Addo would be overthrown just like his late father was in 1972.

“Somebody should tell Nana Akufo-Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the January 13, 1972 a certain Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led a movement that removed the Progress Party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo-Addo’s father was a ceremonial president. Somebody should tell Nana Akufo-Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself,” Mr Anyidoho said.

He added, “There’ll be a civil revolt. There’ll be a people’s movement. During President John Mahama’s tenure didn’t we receive similar threats from the likes of Let My Vote Count and OccupyGhana.

"There’ll be a civilian coup d’état; there’ll be a social revolution and the movement is starting on Wednesday. He [Akufo-Addo] will be fed up at the Presidency.

Mr Anyidoho has been in the custody of the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after his arrest on Tuesday.
