UNI Ghana affiliates launch new websites

ACCRA, AUGUST 2, 2004 -- Three unions in Ghana have launched websites with the help of Union Network International (UNI) and UNIFI in the UK. These websites belong to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) and the Industrial & Commercial Workers Union (ICU).

The UNI Bridge pilot project, which took place in Ghana in August 2003, helped the unions to create their own websites. Six enthusiastic staff members were trained as Web Coordinators: Brother Daniel M. Benin and Sister Linda Botchway from the CWU; Brother Joseph Denteh and Sister Elizabeth Denyoh from the HSWU; and Sisters Jennifer Taylor and Juanita Abankwa from the ICU.

The three unions were each delivered a website created by Brother Ashley Nealfuller of UNIFI (United Kingdom), who was chosen to be sent to Ghana at the UNI Webmasters Forum in April 2003. The three websites are hosted on the UNIFI server but fully managed in Ghana, thanks to a purpose-built content management system. The unions are upbeat about this development and inform us that in Accra alone there are some 5'000 Internet caf?s.

The UNI Bridge project is an integral part of UNI's endeavors to assist affiliates in becoming online organisations. Dozens of Unions around the world have been equipped and trained for the use of I.T. since the creation of UNI in 2000.
