The Ministry of Energy has indicated its resolve to support the Electricity Company of Ghana to upgrade its training school in Tema into a tertiary institution of excellence in order to position it to offer training for electrical and electronic engineers in the country.

The sector minister Boakye Agyarko said this in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Chief Director of the Ministry Mr Lawrence Apalse at a dinner and awards ceremony organized by the ECG to climax its 50th-anniversary celebration in Accra.

According to the Minister, the Ministry believes in capacity building of staff and local expertise, stressing that the training school, if it is upgraded, will play a major role in that direction.

He said there are other things that the ministry will support the ECG to achieve in the ensuing years.

“ECG will also be assisted to leverage its human capacity, knowledge, and skill acquired over the last fifty years and commercialize it,” he stated.

Mr Boakye Agyarko used the opportunity to reiterate government assurance that no ECG staff will lose his or her job when the ongoing concession arrangement to allow private sector participation is finally concluded in September this year.

“The Ministry wishes to reassure all staff of ECG that in accordance with the presidential directive in May last year that, no staff of ECG will lose his or her job as a result of the concession,” the Minister assured.

He said the ECG will have to be restructured under the private sector participation and thus directed the management of ECG to develop strategic and organizational plan in that direction.

Mr Boakye Agyarko pledged the commitment of the Ministry to continue to provide guidance, direction, and support to the ECG to enable the state power distribution company to consolidate its leadership role in the electricity sector not only in Ghana but in the whole of West Africa sub-region.

“ECG will also be assisted to leverage on its human capacity, knowledge and skill acquired over the last fifty years and commercialize,” he stated.
