Alhaji Yakubu, Chairman of a group called Zongo Caucus of Krachi East Municipal Assembly of the Volta Region, has asked the Akufo-Addo-led government to cultivate Indian hemp (wee) to help rake in money to fund the free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

According to Alhaji Yakubu, it has been established that countries that have legalised ‘wee’ are raking in a lot of revenue to support their economies.

To that end, he said the Ghanaian government must emulate those countries and make the cultivation of the narcotic plant legal.

He told Accra News on Tuesday, 20 February that: “There is a lot of money in the cultivation of wee, and, so, the government must consider legalising its cultivation. We can grow wee to finance free SHS, it is better than going for loans to finance the programme”.

Alhaji Yakubu added: “Research has shown that Ghana is the number one cultivator of wee in Africa and third in the whole world, and, so, we cannot pretend that the cultivation is not going on. The point is the government must legalise the cultivation and properly regulate it because other countries have done so and are benefiting from it.”
