Minimum Wage Now 2,000C A Day

Accra The Tripartite Committee today agreed that the current National Daily Minimum Wage of 1,700 cedis be increased to 2,000 cedis (about US$ 1.00) with immediate effect. The decision was arrived at at the end of the committee's deliberations held in Accra, according to an official statement. The statement was signed by Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni, Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr Christian Appiah Agyei, Secretary-General of the TUC, and Mr G. Owusu, Executive Director of the Ghana Employers' Association. It said that the wage component of all Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) that have not (rpt not) been negotiated since January 1997 "should be advanced for negotiations within the Month of May 1997." The committee re-affirmed its commitment to securing the support of the International Labour Organization in establishing the parameters for determining the National Daily Minimum Wage in the future.
