NCCE gears up for 2018; outlines activities to sensitize citizenry on Ghana’s democratic journey

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called for a stronger collaboration between the private and the public sectors as it outlines activities it aims to embark on to educate and sensitize citizens as far as issues of democracy and governance are concerned.

This is to inculcate in Ghanaians awareness of their rights and responsibilities and also empower them to demand accountability from duty-bearers to promote good governance.

The theme for this year’s programme “Our Nation, Our heritage: Consolidating Ghana’s Democratic Gains” will intensify the commission’s engagements with Ghanaians on the country’s democratic history and journey so far, and also focus on civic education that sustains our democratic gains.

Ghana over the years has enjoyed 25 years of uninterrupted and continuous democratic governance with periodic elections to elect its head of states and legislators.

Addressing the media, the Chairperson for NCCE Josephine Nkrumah said the commission’s expectation for 2018 is to actively engage citizens on Ghana’s 25 years of Constitutional rule and intensify public education on anti-corruption, accountability, environmental governance and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It is in line with this that the commission found it useful to educate citizens on the country’s history by setting up activities to achieve the aim of consolidating democratic gains and also celebrate 25 years of their establishment as a Constitutional Body in June 1993 under the National Commission for Civic Education Act, Act 452.

On the quarterly or monthly basis, NCCE activities will cover some thematic areas such as education on the Constitution of Ghana, democracy education, education on Human Rights, promoting peacebuilding and conflict resolution, promoting children’s rights, political and religious tolerance and many more.

Some activities that weren’t fully accomplished in 2017 will also be carried out this year. It includes education on issues regarding tax compliance, good citizenship, collaborating with Media Coalition against Galamsey and child protection, human trafficking and child labour among others.
