Two cops killed at Drobonso

Two police officers, stationed at Drobonso, a farming community in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region, were yesterday allegedly shot dead by armed men believed to be Fulani herdsmen.

A third officer, Constable Enock Okyere, who sustained gunshot wounds, is in critical condition and on admission at Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Today had gathered.

The deceased, Today learnt, were identified as Inspector Adolf Mutse, a driver, and Constable Prosper Ashinyo.

The attack, this paper established, is the second in a week that state security personnel have come under gun attack after armed herdsmen ambushed and shot members of a police-military team in Agogo also in the Ashanti Region.

The incident happened at about 4:50 a.m., when eight (8) armed men reportedly opened fire on the police officers who were on a routine patrol.

Speaking on Accra based Citi FM yesterday Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr. Ken Yeboah, who confirmed the incident, stated that the officers were returning from night patrol duties when they were shot.

According to the senior policeman, the officers came across a roadblock, and immediately stopped, which saw them being fired at by armed men.

“They were ambushed. They went on patrol and on their way back to Kumawu, part of the road had been blocked so when they stopped then they fired at them.”

Two of the officers died instantly, while the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries.

The bodies of the deceased officers have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital awaiting autopsy.

Meanwhile, Drobonsohene, Nana Dwamena Dankwa, suspects nomadic herdsmen were behind the attack.

He wants all herdsmen to vacate the area; failure to do so could lead to forceful eviction.

Sekyere Afram Plains District, which shares borders with both the Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions at Anyinofi, near Atebubu, and Sempoa respectively, has a population of over 36,000 inhabitants.

It has the largest landmark in the southern sector of the country and tagged the fifth largest district in the country.
