2018: Demonstrations will overwhelm government – Federation of Labour

The General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour(GFL) Abraham Koomson has urged the government to brace itself for a turbulent time on labour in 2018, predicting that series of demonstrations will rock the country.

According to him, despite several promises from politicians to improve a lot of industry, little has been done to alleviate the pressure under which industries have been reeling over the past few years.

“If the industries collapse we’re in trouble, so whatever any politician in power will do to help the industry to grow that will be okay. But they’re talking too much, everyday talking, talking, the promises are too much but there’s no commitment. This year, if we’re not careful demonstrations will overwhelm everybody in this country. I foresee demonstrations happening,” he told Starr FM Tuesday.

Mr Koomson who’s also the General Secretary of the Textile, Garment and Leather Employees’ Union (TEGLU), said though he believes President Akufo Addo may not be aware of some of the teething problems facing industries, that’s the only medium through which they can state their case and seek redress.

The Textile, Garment and Leather Employees’ Union (TEGLU) in 2017 served notice of planned demonstrations against government’s inability to publish policy guidelines to regulate the importation and sale of African textile prints into the country.
