We don't want to stay in Ghana, take us to Europe - Liberian refugees beg UNHCR

There are reports of about 57 Liberians besieging the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) to be resettled in Europe.

These refugees say they don't want to be refugees in Ghana and Liberia and that their main plea is to seek a refugee status in Europe.

The refugees, including 35 women, 5 children and 17 men have spent close to a month in front of the Cantonments Police Station in Accra. Some of the leaders of the group, Moses Anderson, say their plea follows the contended land on which they lived at the Budumburam saying it has been taken over by the indigenes.

“We have nowhere to go now. We have been given up to January 15, 2018, to vacate the land. We have no money and no jobs. We don’t know why the UNHCR is delaying with our resettlement,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Ministry is yet to comment on this issue as interrogations into their demands are being examined by both government and the UNHCR.
