Ghanaians schooled on how to live with menopause victims

In a bid to prevent abuse of elderly persons in the country, a group called Guardian Of the Gray Masters has schooled the general public on the proper way to live with older persons who have entered into their menopause stage.

Founder of the group, Mrs. Abigail Appiah in an interview said she was disturbed by the reckless manner most people handle their parents in their menopause age.

According to the aged advocate, people have been abandoning their parents during their menopause, due to their inability to handle them, as their stage is affiliated with a bit of difficulties, a situation she described as dreadful.

"Though living with such persons could sometimes be arduous, we must train ourselves in order to be able to contain the unusual attitude they put up, since it is a natural stage which is bound to happen to every woman".

Menopause refers to the time at which a woman's menstruation stops. It is the absence of menses (a period) for 12 consecutive months. The average age of menopause is 51 years, although this can vary widely.

Every woman is bound to experience Menopause. It occurs due to a complex series of hormonal changes. Associated with the menopause is a decline in the number of functioning eggs within the ovaries.

Most people who find it complex in handling menopause victims sometimes resolve to abandon them or even subject them to several appalling treatment which is unacceptable.

However, Mrs. Abigail believes there are numerous convenient avenues of handling menopause victims to avoid stress or any form of disturbing conditions that come with it.

She advised that people living with such persons should adopt the heart of patience and be tolerance by allowing them to express themselves without interferance and desist from branding them as insane persons.

"Allow the person experiencing menopause to express their feelings: As with any change that a person is experiencing, having someone with whom to discuss concerns is very important. Menopause is no different. Open communication is key for navigating through this trying time. Allowing the person going through menopause to express their feelings as well as expressing your own can alleviate tension for all involved" Mrs. Abigail Appiah.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Abigail has appealed to the general public to unflinchingly support the aged during this Christmas as well any other celebrating event to put smiles on thier faces.

According to her, "by so doing will invite the blessings of the Lord upon your life, as older persons are solely important to God".

"I beseech everybody to consider donating something to the older persons in the society. These people are deprived and cannot work, so its up to we the young ones to take care of them, most especially fathers, because they appear to suffer most, during their old age".

Guardian of Gray Masters is a non profitable organization based in Kumasi, bent on advocating for the welfare of older persons.
