Deputy Director of Public Relations of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Prince Billy Anaglate has says the recent surge in gas explosions in the country are caused by the recklessness of people and it can be prevented through adequate training.

“It is all about recklessness. It is all about the careless way of handling some of these gas facilities that have been resulting into some of these preventable incidents and disasters we have at hand” he stated.

Speaking to Ghanaweb.com at the scene of a gas tanker accident which occurred on the Accra stretch of the Tema motorway, the Deputy Public Relations Officer indicated that if tanker drivers and their conductors as well as filling station attendants are trained adequately it will prevent some of the gas disasters from occurring.

“We have said that before any gas filling station will discharge any gas or offload the gas they should inform fire service then we will send our men there to actually give a fire cover and to ensure that all safety measures are put in place before the gas is offloaded” he said.

“If you look at all these gas explosions that have occurred, almost all of them were at the time that they were offloading and that you would definitely conclude that there were something that have been done wrong that some measures have not been strictly upheld” he explained.

Mr. Anaglate said when the fire service personnel are on the ground they will ensure that all the safety measures are adhered to so that explosions can be prevented.
