Energy expert wants reduction in electricity tariffs

President Akufo-Addo has hinted that electricity tariffs will soon see a downward review President Akufo-Addo has hinted that electricity tariffs will soon see a downward review

An Energy Expert and the Executive Director of the Kumasi Institute of Technology, Ishmael Agyekumhene, says though the announcement on the reduction of electricity tariffs in the upcoming budget is welcoming, government must make sure the move benefits both residential and non-residential consumers.

He said the system where non-residential consumers or industries pay more than residential consumer is a disincentive and can cripple the country's Industrial sector.

Speaking on GBC’s ‘Uniiq Breakfast Drive’, Mr. Agyekumhene said he expects a fair balance in the budget statement as far as reduction of electricity tariffs is concerned.

Mr. Agyekumhene also said the idea of ECG relying more on gas than crude oil to power its plants, is a step in the right direction.

He said considering the fact that gas is cheaper than crude, its use will bring down the cost of production and might possibly lead to a further reduction in tariffs in the near future.
