Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko has admonished heads of utilities in the West African sub-region to think more of how to overcome the challenges confronting them as they strive towards the common objective of having a regional electricity trade.

According to him, the average access rate of 40 percent is too modest to match and fulfil the grand and noble ambitions of universal access and industrialization.

“This meeting should not be just another talking show but set forth concrete recommendation towards the achievement of the vision of WAPP” he said at the 12th WAPP General Assembly in Accra.

He noted that “the implementation of these recommendations may indeed trigger new challenges such as transforming from an information and coordinating centre, and project promoter to a system market operator which must be carefully managed”.

According to him, new skills and attitudes will be required to meet the change in focus of the new stage in the development of WAPP.

He said, “Like a 12-year-old adolescent, WAPP needs to be guided by all the members of the family”.
