Over 6000 Hajj Pilgrims ready to set off for Mecca starting August 10

The 2017 Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca will see a little over 6000 Ghanaians participate in the journey. This emerged during the Vice President’s visit to the Hajj Village in Accra on Thursday, where he met and interacted with some members of the Hajj Board

Vice President Bawumia was informed on the preparations made so far with the journey, as well as noted the recent developmental changes happening at the Hajj Village. Speaking to the media after the visit, Dr. Bawumia lauded the efforts of the Hajj Board under the direction of Sheikh I.C Quaye, especially commending the construction of a clinic and other notable structures on the compound.

According to a Ghana News Agency report, Dr. Bawumia noted that this year’s Hajj was certainly impressively planned and thanked the board for implementing systems to ensure the the journey will be successful.

On August 10, the first group of Hajj Pilgrims will be flown from Tamale Airport to their destination with about 5 subsequent flights to send the rest of the pilgrims.


This year's Hajj pilgrimage is the second time for Ghanaian Muslim pilgrims to be flown from Tamale directly to Saudi Arabia. The project to offer direct flights began during the erstwhile Mahama administration following the completion of an expansion project at the Tamale airport.
