GFD commends Ministry of Roads and Highways for recruiting persons with disabilities

The Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD) has expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the initiative that has seen about 80 Persons with Disability being recruited as tollers in various toll booths across the country.

The GFD in a press release on Monday reminded government that there are more Persons with Disabilities who have higher qualifications and certifications to be considered in positions of trusts, asking that government engage them in their area of expertise as it will promote inclusive development.

GFD COMMENDS MINISTRY OF ROADS AND HIGHWAYS FOR RECRUITING PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AS TOLL COLLECTORS

The Executive Board and Management of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations and the entire disability community in Ghana sincerely express their profound gratitude to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, especially to the Minister Honourable Akwasi Amoako Atta, for his initiative that has resulted in recruiting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as rollers in the various toll booths across the country.

The Ministry in partnership with the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations on Tuesday, 3rd July 2017 held a short programme at Kpobiman toll booth to officially launch the initiative as a means to create jobs and employment for Persons with Disabilities.

At the launch, employment of 80 Persons with Disabilities was officially confirmed by the Minister, Hon Akwasi Amoako Atta. The Minister assured the Federation and the employed PWDs that the safety and security of the employed Persons with Disabilities in the Toll Booths are well catered for; their social security insurance would be paid and other available benefits provided accordingly.

According to him, the move was part of the promise he made before the appointments committee to give 50% of the employment opportunities at the toll booths to persons with disabilities.

He added that the 50% of employment opportunities and vacancies at the toll booths sector represents 200 and that he was sure all the 200 Persons with Disabilities will have been employed and working by the end of August this year.

By this release, the GFD wishes to show appreciation to the commitment of the Ministry to promoting employments of persons with disabilities and encourage Persons with Disabilities who have had this opportunity to work harder to exhibit their capabilities beyond the disabilities.

GFD also wants to use this opportunity to remind government that there are more Persons with Disabilities who have higher qualifications and certifications to be considered in positions of trusts, and entreat government through its Ministries, agencies and departments to follow this step as it is a means to promoting inclusive development.
