Tamale: Assembly evicts street vendors

demolition demolition

A heavy security team led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Tamale, Musah Iddrisu Superior, on Monday, May 15, 2017, embarked on a demolition exercise in the metropolis to clear all traders and vendors selling on the principal streets of the town.

The MCE, soon after his inauguration in March this year, touched on the decongestion of the Tamale central business district as a priority. The assembly informed street vendors of its intentions ahead of today’s exercise. Other stakeholders such as chiefs, religious leaders, and business operators were consulted in the run-up to the exercise.

The exercise took place on Aboabo main street, Tamale Teaching Hospital road, Aboabo-Nyohini road, the main taxi park, and other adjoining streets linking the main Aboabo and central markets.

Speaking to journalists, Mr Musah Iddrisu indicated the exercise was meant to deal with the needless traffic situation in the area arising from sellers and others occupying parts of the streets.

He mentioned that the assembly has made alternative avenues for traders to relocate and continue with their businesses.
