Togolese Embassy denies Eyadama rules Ghana by Proxy

The Togolese Embassy in Ghana on Wednesday denied that the Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema had ever made any declaration that he rules Ghana.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by Gbikpi Benissan, the Togolese Ambassador in Ghana said, "President Eyadema has not at any given point in time made any such declaration to any imagined crowd of supporters in Lome."

The Embassy was reacting to a banner headline in the Monday, March 8, Wednesday, March 10, edition of the National Democrat that "I rule Ghana-President Eyadema declares in Lome."

" I rule Ghana today through the President of Ghana. The days when Ghana and Ghanaians are my enemies are over."

The statement said, "the alleged declarations are fictitious and a contrived invention fabricated from the reporter's own fertile imagination."

The statement said the whole fallacious invention was a malicious attempt to tarnish the good image of the President Eyadema through unnecessary mudslinging and thereby lure him, as it were, into the forbidden arena of Ghana's internal politics.

It said the doors of President Eyadema were always opened to all Ghanaian journalists, including those of the National Democrat and those who would like to interview him or sought clarifications about any burning political or diplomatic issues that would help improve Ghana-Togo relations.

The statement said this was in line with President Eyadema's avowed policy of promoting good neighbourliness and ECOWAS integration. It said, "the improvement of Ghana-Togo relations is a delicate, challenging task that must involve all sections of our societies, especially journalists. It is not simply a task to be achieved by an exclusive club of our Heads of State."
