Chaos characterised Friday’s sitting of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly to confirm the President’s nominee for the municipal chief executive position, Alhaji Alidu Seidu.

The nominee polled eight of the 15 votes cast by the assembly members, representing 47 per cent.

The figure fell short of the two-thirds majority required to become the MCE for the Assembly.

Apparently not happy by the development, some supporters of New Patriotic Party pounced on the assembly members and beat them for not voting for the nominee.

They did not understand why the assembly members, 14 of who are perceived to be NPP members, voted against President Akufo-Addo’s nominee. Alhaji Seidu contested the parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP but lost to the incumbent NDC candidate, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak.

The presence of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, her Deputy, Elizabeth Agyeman and the Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Osei Assibey Antwi did not deter the supporters to attack the assembly members. It took the intervention of the police personnel to save the situation.

The assembly consists of ten elected assembly members and five government appointees. Some of the supporters who spoke to Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene on Friday vowed never to accept any nominee apart from the failed candidate.

They alleged that some members of the National Democratic Congress were seen sharing money to the assembly members to influence them to reject the President’s nominee.
