Fatal Motor bike accidents in Ashanti Reigion alarming – NRSC

The Ashanti Regional office of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) is concerned the number of accidents caused by motor-bikes and tricycles describing it as alarming.

Eighty two (82) people have died in the Ashanti region this year with four hundred and seventy five (375) injured as a result of road accidents representing an increase in fatalities compared to last year.

The region has recorded four hundred and seventy four (474) accidents involving over seven-hundred people between January and end of March 2017.

Three hundred and sixty four (364) people were involved in accidents involving commercial vehicles, two hundred and sixty (260) were private and a hundred and two (102) were caused by motor cycles and tricycles.

Speaking to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador the Ashanti Regional director of NRSC Ing Samuel Asiamah pointed out, “some years ago, motor cycles were just an insignificant part of the accident cases recorded but gradually they are taking about eleven percent of the number of accident cases.

“Again for the past three months, most of these pedestrian knock downs are as a result of motor cycle cases and this is a worrying trend that we will have to deal with.”

He also expressed concern that a majority of tricycles popularly called “Abobo Yaa” which have proliferated the region, are becoming notorious for knocking pedestrians down because they have no lights and reflectors on their buckets.

He however assured that his outfit is working with the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) on a one day express training and certification exercise where motor riders are aided to register their bikes and obtain licenses in a day.
