President Nana Akufo Addo has said it is a national scandal for Ghana to import food.

The president addressing a private dinner held in honour of the Minister for Agric said, ‘’it is a national scandal that we have to import plantain from Abidjan, tomatoes from Burkina Faso-And that we cannot in Ghana feed ourselves…If anybody can get us on the right path, making a self sustaining agricultural system, I believe is Afriyie Akoto,’’

Nana Addo said and went ahead to call for support for the minister. The President also described the Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto as the best candidate to man his position.

The minister he added can chart a part to revive our agricultural sector with growth expansion and growth so that Ghana can feed itself. President Akufo-Addo said, the minister could not be compared to anyone in terms of the job.

Nana Addo described him as competent and someone who values and principles that cannot be compromised. I think all of you here are aware of the friendship between me and Owusu Afriyie.

It dates back. Our parents were on the same side of the political divide, the very difficult moment for them in our history. They were swimming against the tide of the time but they believed in what they stood for and never flinched because they believed that the valued and principles they were trying to impress upon the Ghanaian people will be the values that would prevail and today we have seen that the principles and values have become the animating principles of our national lives."

The President added "So all through these difficult periods Owusu Afriyie and I used to have endless and interminable discussions and criticzing things that had gone wrong and saying we could do better.

We have the opportunity now and we need to do better. I had no hesitation in making this appointment because I don't know anybody in Ghana who has the passion, the commitment, the knowledge as well as the interest of farmers more than Owusu Afriyie," He emphasized.
