Two institutions donate to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital

Accra, Jan.28 GNA - The National Investment Bank Limited (NIB) on Wednesday presented a cheque for 50 million cedis to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Endowment Fund in Accra.

The Fund, targeted to raise 500 billion cedis within five years, was set up two years ago to mobilise funds locally to provide basic infrastructure and equipment for the Hospital.

Mr Owusu Tweneboa, Deputy Managing Director of the Bank, who presented the cheque, said it was part of the Bank's social responsibility policy to support the health sector.

He said the Bank realised the enormous problems facing the Hospital and, therefore, found it necessary to contribute to it to enable the hospital to provide quality health care delivery. Mr Tweneboa appealed to other corporate organisations and philanthropists to emulate the Bank and contribute generously to the fund.

Dr Benjamin Daniel Richard Annan, Director of Medical Affairs, who received the cheque, urged the Bank to continue to support Korle-Bu to provide excellent health care delivery.

In another development, Agape Samaritans International (ASI), a nongovernmental organisation (NGO) based in Arkansas, United States of America donated items worth 500,000 dollars to the Hospital. The items included computers, laboratory equipment, wheelchairs, clutches, scrub uniforms, dippers and disposable gloves.

Ms Elizabeth Ashun, President of ASI in Ghana, said with the problems faced by both health professionals and the para-medical staff of the Hospital, the items would enable the doctors and nurses to carry out their functions efficiently and effectively.

Ms Ashun said the NGO had already provided free medical care to the residents of La and Ningo in the Greater Accra Region, Takoradi and Kumasi.

Ms Theresah Tawiah Komieter, Acting Director of Nursing Services, who received the items, called on other NGO to come to the assistance Hospital. 28 Jan 04
