Ghana superstar Asamoah Gyan may be about to get an elite new strike partner at Al-Ahli, after Republic of Ireland great Robbie Keane started training with the Emirati side.

The 36-year-old left Los Angeles Galaxy in November when his contract expired, and is yet to find a new club despite various suitors.

Sunderland, one of Gyan’s former clubs, have been linked with a move to sign the Eire legend, but with no contract offer seemingly forthcoming from the Premier League side, Keane could be closing in on a move further afield.

The Emirati side— who currently sit fourth in the Arabian Gulf League—have shared photos of Keane in training as he looks to secure a move to the Middle East.

Should Keane finalise a deal with Ahli, he would vie with Gyan as the club’s most high-profile player, having enjoyed stints with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, Internazionale, Leeds United and West Ham United during his nomadic career.

He retired from international duty with the Republic of Ireland last year after managing a record 68 goals in 146 matches.

It remains to be seen when Gyan will be back in action for his club side, having picked up an injury during Ghana’s Nations Cup campaign.

The striker was injured against Egypt in Ghana’s third group game, and was only available to return in a cameo capacity in the semi-final defeat against Cameroon.
