EC Won't Back Down On Creation of New Constituencies

The Electoral Commission has stated that it will not back down to pressures from any quarter on its decision to create additional 30 constituencies for this years general elections.

“We will not engage in any debate with any personality or take into consideration the concerns raised by people. Anybody who thinks the Commission, has gone contrary to the powers vested in it by the constitution in this exercise, can go to the Supreme Court for interpretation of the law”, the EC stated.

According to Henry Okyne, Director of Public Relations of the Commission even though the EC had heard the concerns raised by certain personalities, it would go ahead with its decision to create 30 constituencies for this years elections.

He said the Commission is at the moment preparing a constitutional instrument to be laid before Parliaments within 21 days for it to be legalized.

Mr. Okyne noted that at the regular, Inter – Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings held in Accra, all the political parties agreed that, if the 200 seats were maintained some of the parties would lose while others would gain, so it was better to create additional constituencies for the elections.
