Government has paid GH¢188,307,266 to cover the outstanding amount owed caterers of the School Feeding Programme for the 2014/2015 academic year, myradio360 has been informed.

It is the first time a sitting government has settled the debts, with only the last term’s (three month) yet to be cleared.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, disclosed this in Accra yesterday when her ministry took its turn at Meet-the-Press series.

She indicated that new things were being implemented to boost its operation, saying very soon, beneficiaries of the programme would use cards as and when they were served. The new electronic payment, she said, would help give the accurate number of children served among other things.

Nana Oye said the programme has also created jobs for a number of people; for instance, 10,913 farmers and market women had been rolled onto the programme which had directly created jobs for them.
