PPP cites Akufo-Addo for false declaration; accuses EC of Selective Justice

The Progressive People’s Party is accusing the Electoral Commission of clearing the NPP's presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo to contest the December 7, polls even though he did not comply with some important requirements in his nomination forms as demanded by the EC.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Accra, Policy Adviser of the party, Kofi Asamoah Siaw said the Electoral Commission passed Akufo-Addo who lied under oath, about the declaration of his asset.

“So, the question we are asking is that why did the EC overlook this offence and pass these candidates without raising any issue? Is this not a matter of selective justice ...the EC Chairperson is a lawyer and must know this. We understand that Nana Akufo-Addo did not comply with this requirement, and we sight him for false declaration, but he stands qualified per the EC’s decision as a presidential candidate. This is [a] clear selective application of EC’s own laws”.





The PPP and 11 others were disqualified from the race over various anomalies. The other disqualified aspirants include the flag bearer of the All People's Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga; Dr Edward Mahama of the People's National Convention (PNC); Dr Agyenim Boateng of the United Front Party (UFP); Kofi Akpaloo of the Independent People's Party (IPP); Kwabena Adjei of the Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD); and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Others include: Dr Henry Herbert Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP); Mr Richard Nixon Tetteh (United Development Systems Party); Thomas Ward-Brew of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP); Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker, an independent candidate, and Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). Mr Akwasi Addae Odike of the United Progressive Party's nomination is on hold pending a court case.
