Former MP testifies before NRC

Accra, Nov. 19, GNA - Mr. Alex Adjei, former Member of Parliament of Asamankese during Dr. Limann's administration on Wednesday told the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) that he was arrested, beaten and made to face a panel chaired by Flight Lieutenant Rawlings at the Gondar Barracks on February 2, 1982.

He said the other panel members, included Mr. Kojo Tsikata and Mr. Riyad Hoziafeh, adding that he was questioned on an alleged statement he made to the effect that the destruction of the Makola market by the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) was senseless.

Mr. Adjei was reacting to questions by Mr. Hoziafeh, who said he was an officer in the office of the President during the PNDC regime, during a cross-examination in which he (Hoziafeh) had denied all the evidence given by Mr. Adjei.

He said Mr. Hoziafeh had been his friend but during the PNDC revolution he became his enemy because of the way soldiers beat him up in Hoziafeh's presence.

Mr. Adjei said he was arrested together with Kwaku Baah and Mr. Tagoe all Members of Parliament, adding that they were first taken to the operations room at the Police Headquarters before he was taken to Gondar Barracks.

Mr. Hoziafeh, on his part denied all the allegations by Mr. Adjei, adding that he (Adjei) was never brought to Gondar Barracks for any interrogation.

"I never saw him in any office in the Gondar barracks nor was he made to face any panel made up of Chairman Rawlings, Tsikata and myself.''
