Consultant to study detailed design of Tema Motorway for interchanges

Accra, Nov. 18, GNA - The Ministry of Roads and Transport has engaged a consultant for the study and detailed design of the roads and interchanges/flyovers as part of the Accra East Corridor Development Programme.

The study and design, scheduled for completion in March 2004, would provide for the efficient movement of traffic between Accra to Tema and the settlements in the vicinity of the Motorway.

Dr Richard Anane, the Sector Minister, said this in answer to an urgent question asked by Mr Abraham Ossei Aidoo, NPP-Tema West in Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr Aidoo, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader, asked whether the Ministry would consider the construction of a flyover across the Accra to Tema Motorway to link Klagon/Lashibi and Ashaiman as a permanent solution to the persistent and perennial flooding of the Klagon/Ashaiman under-pass. Dr Anane said the scope of the service would include the design of over 100 kilometres of arterial roads and 30 kilometres of local roads within Teshie, Nungua, Lashibi, Community 12,18, 20 and the Tema Township.

Also to be studied, he said were four interchanges of Lashibi to Klagon, Johnson Wax to Adjiringano and Teshie Link to East Legon Extension to provide North/South movement over the Motorway.

Dr Anane said in the meanwhile, a private real estate company had submitted proposals to the Ministry for the construction of the Johnson Wax to Adjiringano Interchange

The 17-kilometre Accra to Tema Motorway was constructed with restricted access to it.

The massive developments within the vicinity of the Motorway since the past two decades had resulted in the need to provide accesses to residents and institutions in the area such as Ashaiman, East Legon Extension, Adjiringano and the southern part of the capital.

Dr Anane said currently there was an interchange under construction to link Tema Hospital Road to Ashaiman and the project was scheduled for completion before the end of 2004.

Mr Mumuni Abudu Seidu, NDC-Wa Central, asked the Minister about the arrangement put in place to stop the flooding in the underpass of the Motorway and the Minister said the Field Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces was finding temporary solution to the problem.

Mr Kwakye Addo, NDC- Wenchi West, asked whether frequent rehabilitation works without solution was not causing financial loss to the State and the Minister said since the works were temporary it did not cause financial loss to the State. 18 Nov. 03
