The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Alfred Vanderpuije, has donated some food items to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital at Asylum Down in Accra.

The food items include five bags of maize, five bags of rice, one box of fresh tomatoes, a carton of tin tomatoes, and a cheque for GHS5,000 to support basic necessities.

According to the MCE, the authorities from the hospital last week pleaded with companies, individuals, and many others for their support.

“We have heard your cry for support and we appreciate the good work you are doing for our family members,” Mr. Vanderpuije said.

He also said the hospital needed modern infrastructure, something he noted the Ministry of Health and government were working on.

Mr. Vanderpuije, however, assured the hospital of the AMA’s support in order to improve on the living and health conditions of the inmates, something he assured them would be done weekly. He stated that the donation is to support the hospital and inmates, since they cannot do everything on their own, adding that the donation would solve the challenges the hospital was facing.

Dr. Adwoa Pinaman Apau, the Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, said the hospital was still seeking support and funding from groups, individuals, corporate bodies, companies, and many others.

She stated that the hospital had run out of food, which had created a big challenge, adding that the AMA has always been a reliable helper.

“These food items would go a long way to aid the hospital and enable them to serve the inmates very well,” she indicated.

She further added that the food items had come at the right time, as the hospital was in need of such items to make life easier for the inmates.

Dr. Apau thanked the AMA for its support and used the platform to plead with other assemblies and the general public to come to their aid.
