Polls not possible on Nov 7 - Jantuah

Looking at the challenges facing Ghana at the moment, the country will not be able to adequately prepare for the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for November 7, therefore, the December 7 date should be maintained for this year’s elections, Kwame Jantuah, a member of the Convention People Party has suggested.

Mr. Jantuah proposes that the intended date change be delayed until 2020, by which time, in his estimation, all the processes and procedures necessary to make such a transition seamless, would have been gone through.

“We have known for some time now that the duration of time that we have, after elections, to swear in the president and get everything in place has been problematic. We have always faced these problems, and, so, if that is the case and this proposal [date change] is made, it is incumbent on all those who form part and parcel, of making sure that this proposed date of November 7 is planned adequately, so that it doesn’t get people agitated,” Mr Jantuah said on TV3’s New Day programme on Saturday May 21.

On the same programme, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem South constituency, O. B. Amoah, said Parliament “is waiting for the Attorney General to present the bill on behalf of the EC, to Parliament.”

He explained that “the EC made a proposal to the Attorney General to the effect that they wanted that provision amended, so the Attorney General carried it to cabinet after cabinet approval. So, we are expecting that the bill will be laid in parliament by the Attorney General on behalf of the EC, so the first gazette has taken place.”
