The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has revealed that it has begun negotiations with customers in the Ashanti region who have had their power disconnected because of debts owed to agree on a repayment plan.

The Ashanti Regional office of the ECG has indicated that it is ready to reconnect power to such facilities and homes if the customers approach the company and agree and commit themselves on a payment schedule.

Its Public Relations Manager (PRO), Erasmus Kyereh Baidoo in an interview with Ultimate News, revealed that the ECG has set up a desk for what it calls a Customer Debt Negotiation Arrangement headed by a debt collection officer.

He urged defaulting customers to take advantage of this window to clear their debts in order to enable them enjoy uninterrupted power supply.

“We have designated a desk since December 2015 for debts to be collected in all our business centres. Once you agree on a payment plan and start paying, you will be reconnected because these days the suppliers have been diversified and it is only ECG that pay them. We don’t want to pile up the debts. It is for this reason we are changing all the prepaid meters to post-paid”, he revealed.

He also indicated that the ECG in the Ashanti region has not halted its operation to arrest and prosecute persons who are proving difficult to pay for power consumed.

“We arrested a lot of people and about 33 people are still in the circuit court facing trial. We do not want consumers to face prosecution that is why we are rolling out some of these schedules for them to pay debts owed the ECG”, he added.
