Cornerstone of governance should be the welfare of the people - Kufuor

Accra, Sept. 29, GNA - The cornerstone of governance should be the welfare of the people, President John Agyekum Kufuor, has said in Tokyo, Japan.

He said the emergence of a new crop of leaders in Africa depicted an era of good governance where democracy was a cardinal feature. He noted that democracy should bring improvement in living standards of the people.

President Kufuor said these when he took his turn at the Third International Conference on African Development (TICAD) currently underway in Tokyo, Japan.

In a press statement from the Ministry of President Affairs, the Press Secretary to the President, Mr Kwabena Agyepong was quoted as saying that President Kufuor also called on developing countries to push for fairer trade through the creation of a level playing field for international trade.

President Kufuor said African Leaders must promote good governance to attract good investment.

He commended the Western countries for contributing towards the resolution of conflicts and crisis in the West Africa Sub-Region, adding, "challenges in post conflict management are equally enormous and require comprehensive support for lasting solution".
