Electricity Company of Ghana is being restructured to ensure efficiency at the downstream level is improved, President John Dramani Mahama has said.

Five members of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) sought to challenge in court the moves by government to partially privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In an application filed at the Human Rights Court, the petitioners prayed the court to direct government to “cease forthwith from undertaking or continuing any process of any kind whatsoever to privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana”.

But President Mahama in a Press Conference in Accra Tuesday, January 12 said the company has not been put up for privatization as widely speculated, rather he said the move is to ensure ECG is commercially viable, and that it is able to recover its cost and invest in maintenance and expansion.

He said “government is only putting in a system that will help rake in more revenue to improve operations at the ECG, ” insisting that ECG still has a stake in the new development.

He reiterated that more than a million dollars had been injected in that move in the bid to improve efficiency in the operations at the downstream.
