Jumia, Africa’s largest online shopping mall, aims to surpass last year’s Black Friday e-commerce success, with a tenfold increase in sales and over 1,500,000 online visitors in one day alone.

Accra, November 16th, 2015 - Black Friday, one of the most popular shopping events in the world, is all about deals and bargain hunting. Set to be the first and largest event of its kind in Africa, Jumia, the leading online shopping destination in Africa, introduced Black Friday to the African market in 2013.

“Originally established in the U.S. more than 50 years ago, Black Friday is now a well-known sales day both in the U.S. and Europe. People go mad for it. This year, we bring the concept to Ghana. We've got mind blowing deals for our customers. And can't wait to share them!’ stated Sam Chappatte, Managing Director of Jumia's New Countries.

In 2014, while more than 100 million Americans were shopping over the Black Friday holiday, millions more were shopping online on Jumia. Last year, Jumia reached an all-peak in sales within 24 hours and had over 1,500,000 online visitors. Over 50% of the visitors accessed the site through a mobile device via Android or iOS. These sales represented an extraordinary tenfold order increase compared to 2013's Black Friday

“Africa’s disposable income & online consumption is growing at an extraordinary rate. In Ghana, we expect to sell more in this year's Black Friday than in the whole of 2014. But this is just the start. We are here for the long term and have plenty more surprises to come”, added Funlola Abe, Country Manager of Jumia Ghana.

Last year's Black Friday sales primarily focused on consumer electronics, with a particular interest in digital products such as flat screen TVs, digital cameras and ventilation systems. This year, Jumia predicts that it will sell a lot more fashion & cosmetics too, with great deals such as Pencil Dresses from Virtue Clothier selling at GHc50 (original price GHc125).

Jumia positions itself as the leading marketplace for high-end local and international brands. Jumia works with everyone from local fashion brands such as Rudy Wear and Adjoa Yeboah Clothing (up to 40% off!) to established mobile brands such as Infinix, Samsung and Innjoo.

On Jumia's Black Friday, you will be able to get your hands on Binatone BLG 450 blenders for GHC 99 (that's 30 off!) and Lenovo Rockstar smartphones for GHC 239 (that's 25% off too!).

“By tapping into this global shopping phenomenon, with the support of our partners Infinix, Innjoo, Binatone, Mediatek, Tigo and Guinness, we have created a powerful event that our customers will love. Bring on the 27th November!” concluded Funlola Abe.
