NPP’s electoral register 'bombshell' is not new - Kofi Adams

The New Patriotic Party (NPP's) new bombshell detailing cases of double and multiple registrations in the current voters’ register, to aid the opposition party's desire for a new electoral register have been rubbished by Kofi Adams, National Organizer of the ruling NDC.

The NPP last week sealed the case for a fresh voters’ register when it submitted to the Electoral Commission additional evidence to back its case on the flawed nature of the current Register, which necessitates the compilation of a new one.

The General Secretary who worked closely with the Party’s IT team have unraveled the existence of thousands of separate cases of double and multiple registrations, by various persons across the country, in the current register, making relevant the need for a new voter register to replace the current register.

In all, the Party submitted to the Electoral Commission samples of 2,096 separate cases of double and multiple registrations from all the 10 Regions of Ghana. These separate cases can be grouped under three main forms – the first involves the cases of double and multiple registrations with multiple photographs; the second involves double and multiple registrations with multiple voter’s ID numbers, and the third involves same registration details and photographs in different Polling Stations.

The pile of additional evidence was presented to the Electoral Commission accompanied by a cover letter signed by the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong detailing the extent of inaccuracies within the current Register aside the evidence of foreign voters and scanned pictures in the register which the Party has already made a comprehensive presentation to the Electoral Commission on.

But Kofi Adams, speaking on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show said the existence of double and multiple registrations in the voters’ register is known to all the political parties which necessitated the Electoral Commission to form a committee comprising representations of the parties to address the issue.

He emphasized the opposition NPP is being pretentious not to know that the biometric machine in itself cannot delete names which appear more than once; explaining why the EC has set up a committee for de-duplication of which former NPP National Chairman, Peter Mac-Manu is a member.

“This I’m sure the NPP know, but they are pretending to do this thing they are doing; all the political parties are aware, and that explains why EC has set up a committee for de-duplication", he added.
