Gyan’s Al Ain knocked out of President's Cup

The Black Stars skipper and his Abu Dhabi side were eliminated from the President's Cup after falling to Al Nasr

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan and his Abu Dhabi-based club Al Ain suffered a 1-0 defeat against Al Nasr in the President's Cup quarterfinals in Dubai on Saturday.

Zlatic Dalic’s men took their revenge this term after losing 2-1 to the Boss in the semi-finals last season.

Gyan scored four goals in the round of 16 tie last week when Al Ain mauled Dibba Al Fujairah 5-0 but failed to repeat that brilliance during the weekend as most of his clear cut chances were thwarted by Nasr defence.

Senegal international Ibrahima Toure scored the only goal of the night in the 89th minute after missing two glorious opportunities within two minutes.

The former Monaco striker was set up by a Pablo Hernandez’s through pass, as he kept his composure before smashing his effort past goalkeeper Khalid Essa.

Ain made scary attempts to grab the leveller late into the meeting, but Nasr held on until the final whistle.

After winning the UAE Pro-League, Al Ain were aiming for a domestic double in the President Cup campaign. However, they are still in course for the Asian Champions League, as they take on archrivals Al Ahli on Wednesday.
