Candidates for Amenfi West Bye-election intensify campaign

Mrs Agnes Sonful, New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the Amenfi West by-election has stepped up her campaign in the rural areas of the Constituency.

The campaigns took her to Mmosiaso, Oda-Kutuomso and Afiena all cocoa growing communities.

During interactions with the chiefs and people of the communities she told them that she would use her Member of Parliament's share of the District Assemblies' Common Fund to assist needy but brilliant pupils in the area to further their education when elected.

Mrs Sonful said child labour, which was rampant in the area, would be her main focus.

''Child trafficking and child slavery are an insult to the Ghanaian identity and will have devastating effects on the future of the country.''

She pledged her commitment to support the community in whatever way she could and pledged that she would join the chiefs to initiate development programmes and alternative employment opportunities for the youth when elected.

Mr Samuel Alberto-Takyi, District Chief Executive for Wassa Amenfi, said he was hopeful that the NPP would win convincingly in the election slated for April 24.

Mr Ebo Archer, a 59-year teacher, who is also contesting on the ticket of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Asankrangwa on Thursday that the establishment of an educational fund for the youth in the Wassa Amenfi District, would be his major priority when elected.

He said many of the youths in the District did not go to school due to financial constraints and pledged to reverse the situation.

Mr Archer expressed regret that the whole District did not have a football team and promised to create one, to entertain and unearth sporting talents in the area for national use.

He said due to financial constraints, an under 14 and 18 football teams he started about four years ago, had to stop mid-way but pledged that he would revive the playing of football among the youth.
