Gov’t introduces e-pay slips to fight ghost names

The government of Ghana is providing unique codes to every public sector worker that will be used to pay salaries, the finance minister said.

According to Seth Terkper, the codes will enable government workers to access their payslips online as part of moves to eliminate phantom names in the system.

He said the project is being piloted at some public institutions and has been successful so far.

“We have provided codes for each employee [is not completed] to be able to check their payslips,” Terkper said during his turn at the Meet the Press series Friday, in Accra.

“We used to provide paper pay slips and there used to be a lot of media coverage about people not receiving their pay slips and the reason is that you can use your phone or computer to check.”

He added: “It is being expanded, and if you contact the Treasury of the Controller you’ll be provided with a code. We’re going to follow that with an e-voucher which is being pilot in some institutions already... Before the wages are paid, we’ll provide electronic information to the unit level for validation…

“We are working with the heads of civil services and public services to establish a human resource management system for the entire public service.”

The European Union has suspended aid to Ghana until the public payroll is cleansed of ghost names.
