Kufuor mourns Kwahumanhene

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor Monday, December 8, 2014 - on the occasion of his 76th birthday – joined the people of Kwahu in the Eastern Region to mourn Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II, the late Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

The late Kwahu Manhene, who died a year ago, was the classmate of former President Kufuor at Prempreh College in Kumasi. The late monarch was appointed chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board by the Kufuor administration.

Mr. Kufour was accompanied by the two Members of Parliament for Mpraeso and Abetifi constituencies, Seth Acheampong and Peter Wiafe Peprah respectively, as well as other top notches of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to file past the late Kwahu Manhene’s body which was laid in state at Abene.

Mr. Kufuor later went to the forecourt of the Abene palace to sign the book of condolences. The one-week funeral celebration, which commenced on Sunday, 7 December, will end on Sunday, 14 December. It is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama; Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, the flagbearer of the NPP; ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, among other dignitaries.

The late Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II was 80 years and ruled as the President of the Kwahuman Traditional Council for 42 years. He was known in private life as Nana Kofi Ampadu Acheampong, who started his basic education at the Abene Methodist Primary School and later attended Nkwatia Government School and proceeded to the Prempeh College.

He was first enstooled as Kwahuhene in 1956 at the age of 21 but later abdicated the stool in 1961 to further his education at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law where he came out successfully as a legal brain.

Late Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II was again enstooled as the Kwahu Manhene in October 1971 and later became the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs for two consecutive terms – from 1982 to 1989. He was also elected as the Vice President of the National House of Chiefs from 1985 to 1988.

The late Kwahu Manhene worked in a number of institutions and corporate organisations and was appointed Board Chairman of the Ghana Oil Company where he contributed immensely to the growth of the nation.
