Kwesi Appiah backs Black Stars to beat Guinea

Ex-Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has backed the Black Stars to dispatch Guinea in Saturday’s 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifier in Morocco even though he is currently not in charge of the squad.

Appiah was sacked last month after he supervised the country’s chaotic World Cup campaign in Brazil with many blaming other factors for the team’s dismal showing.

He left his role last month, despite the Ghana Football Federation (GFA) previously backing the 54-year-old after a tumultuous World Cup.

Ghana were knocked out in the group stages after taking just one point amid rumours of a row over match fees, while Kevin Prince-Boateng and Sulley Muntari were both suspended by the GFA for breaches of discipline.

Appiah was in charge as Ghana started the rebuilding process by taking four points from their opening AFCON qualifying Group E encounters with Uganda and Togo last month, but the reprieve proved short lived.

He has backed his former number two man Maxwell Konadu to win his first game in charge of the African side.

“It is a game for all Ghanaians and the national team belongs to all of us so I will wish my assistant) Maxwell Konadu the best of luck and I believe he is capable of doing it.” he told Kumasi-based Angel FM.

They will play at the Syli Nationale on 11 October in Casablanca, Morocco before hosting the return leg four days later.
