President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to begin registration of all traders in the Kumasi Central Market in a move that is expected to assure the traders of getting back their stores when attempts to rebuild one of the biggest markets in West-Africa is completed.
The President who joined thousands of Muslims in the Central Mosque in Kumasi, the capital of Ghana's most populous region -Ashanti Region - to celebrate the end of Ramadan, said the list of registered businesses in the market will be published in the national dailies on completion of the registration exercise.
"The KMA must register even single person currently doing business in the market. This registered list will be published in the national newspapers and the person who will be so registered will be given the priority and allocation of space when the new market is completed," he said.
Plans to rebuild the Kumasi Central Market have been on the drawing board for some time now following perennial outbreak of fire in the place.
This year alone, the market has been gutted by fire twice, with the recent happening 10 days ago, which left in its wake widespread destruction and devastated traders, mainly women, whose trading capital fizzled out in the smoke.
Several attempts to rebuild the market over the years have been resisted by the traders who fear they will be priced out and lose their place of business when the new market is completed.
