A National Youth Patriotism Lecture has been held in Kumasi with a call for more deliberate and co-ordinated efforts to provide young people with direction and infuse in them a sense of patriotism.
Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area said the youth ought to be given the needed orientation to approach national development issues with selflessness, commitment and passion.
“Our youth of today have lost focus of their responsibilities and duties as true sons and daughters of the nation,” he said, noting that this was evident from their lukewarm attitude to national issues.
The programme was organised by the National Youth Authority (NYA) with the goal of rekindling their sense of nationalism.
“Promoting Social Values, Nationalism and Integrity through Youth Leadership and Mentorship” was the theme for the programme and it brought together students and various youth groups.
Nana Nketsia said it was time the young people took inspiration from the selflessness demonstrated by their forefathers in the struggle for political independence and worked to fly the flag of Ghana high.
He encouraged the NYA to institutionalise the programme to create awareness and aid the youth to take responsibility and play their expected roles well to ensure national progress.
Nana Ato Dadzie, a former Chief of Staff, advised student bodies to take keen interest in volunteerism and outreach programmes.
He said by their training and expertise, students were strategically positioned to bring their knowledge to bear on community development in the areas of civic education, sanitation and environmental protection.
Samuel Sarpong, Ashanti Regional Minister, advised students to concentrate on their studies and refuse to be part of any endeavour that could ruin their future.
