Ga East Municipal improves revenue collection

Mr John Kwao Sackey, the Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, has said the Assembly last year generated revenue of GH1,761,560.17 representing 86 per cent of its targeted revenue at the close of December 31.

In 2012, we collected GH1,928,429.50 which also represented 86.3 per cent and that was 0.3 per cent more than what the Assembly made last year, he said at the 2014 first quarter general meeting of the Assembly at Abokobi in Accra.

He said the Dome Market traders Association were contracted to collect revenue for the Assembly in the Dome Market and revenue collection in the market had improved.

Mr Sackey said members of the Assembly last year approved the auctioning of some of its obsolete vehicles and equipment and proceeds would be used to procure additional vehicles.

He said the Ga East Municipality had been considered to benefit from the first 50 of the Community Day Senior High Schools to be constructed this year and the Assembly had secured a four-acre land at Kwabenya for the project.

Mr Sackey said the Assembly had made provision for the extension of its office complex and had secured office for the Municipal Electoral Commission at Kwabenya since the Municipal office now falls under the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly.

He said the Assembly had acquired two plots of land at Kponkpo from its share of the District Assembly Common Fund to put up a multi- purpose office complex for the Federation Association of the Disabled.

On the performance of schools in the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examinations, he said the Municipality presented 6,932 candidates and ranked 26th in the country.

Mr Sackey said there was the need to strengthen the oversight role of the Municipal Education Directorate on the private schools to enable them not only prepare the children for only examinations but also for quality and improved education.

He said the Taifa Polyclinic had been inaugurated and was put up with the support of the MPs Common Fund and that the Assembly had awarded a contract for the construction of a fence wall at the facility at a cost GH46,007.60.

The Assembly has, from its share of the District Development Fund, completed the Kwabenya Library and Community Information Center (CIC).

Mr Sackey said the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) had given CIC a photocopier machine, 10 desktop computers and its accessories with a one year internet services connection at a cost of GH165, 264.40.
