A scheduled appearance of the National Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, on the floor of Parliament had to be indefinitely postponed on Friday, March 14.
Dr. Afari Gyan was expected to brief the House on preparations on this year’s district level elections.
Last week, First Deputy Speaker Ebo Barton Oduro summoned the Electoral Commissioner to appear this week.
Some Members of Parliament appeared frustrated over the failure of Dr. Afari Gyan to appear in the House and demanded answers from leadership.
“We are still dealing with the details of the exact timing, and I am sure you will be informed in due course,” Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor, the Majority Leader, told Members of Parliament (MPs) on Friday.
Dr. Afari Gyan hinted last month, when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, that the district elections may not be held as a result of lack of funds.
He cited that Parliament only approved less than half of the GH¢ 327,179,894 it had requested in the 2014 budget.
The elections are scheduled to be held in October.
