NDC MPs financing Atta Mills

The NDC campaign directorate of Prof John Evans Atta Mills on Wednesday confirmed that the directorate had been paying monies to delegates and individuals during their tour of the regions.

These monies, they explained, were meant for transport and other expenses the delegates might incur on their way to the constituencies? capitals.

A reliable source who pleaded anonymity confirmed this to The Evening News in an interview in Accra. The source however stated that such monies did not come from Prof Mills himself or the directorate, but contributions from well-wishers and his admirers. For example, the source said in the Upper East Region, seven out of the eight parliamentarians contributed ?1.5m each towards a successful campaign in the region.

Other contributors were from constituency executives and NDC activists in the region. It mentioned John Mahama, MP for Bole, as having contributed immensely towards Prof Mills? campaign in the Northern Region.

Asked why the old guards in the NDC have abandoned Dr Kwesi Botchwey and following Prof Mills, the source described Dr Botchwey as an opportunist, who wanted to reap where he had not sown. ?Dr Botchwey abandoned the NDC midstream when the then government was facing problems. He failed to contribute towards the organisation of the party when we expected him to channel his wealth towards re-building the party,? he said.

The source said the NDC postponed its last congress because of financial crisis that bedevilled the party when Dr Botchwey was enjoying his affluence in far away United States of America. ?Not even a well-wishing card was posted to the members of the party when finally they were able to raise funds to organise the congress in April,? the source stated.
